What matters is that I was in that building that morning to brief on a programme review, and that among the eleven companies inside the scope of that review is Caldwell Systems.
My father did not know that at ten o’clock.
By about half past twelve he did, because somebody in that room told him, and because Dash had got my rank off the internet by then.
And at twenty past two he was waiting for me on the drive.
Twenty-six years and he came across that gravel with both arms out and called me sweetheart.
He wanted to take me to dinner. He wanted me to meet people. He said the word family four times in about ninety seconds and he had not said it to me since 1999.
I said, “Dad, stop.”
Because I had already filed.
I went out of that briefing at eleven forty, found the ethics counsel on the second floor, and declared it in writing before I had lunch.
Father. Caldwell Systems. Full recusal from anything touching that company for as long as I hold the post.
He was asking me for something I had already given away an hour and a half before he asked.
PART 3 — 1999
And then the ethics declaration did what declarations do, which is that somebody ran the searches properly.
In the November I got a call from a woman in that office who was very careful with her voice, and she asked whether I was aware of an agreement dated the ninth of June 1999 between Caldwell Systems and Elspeth Marr.
My mother.
She worked for that company from 1990 to 1998, in procurement, which is how she met him.
She was dismissed in the October of 1998. She brought a claim.
It settled in the June of 1999 for a figure I am not going to publish, and the agreement has the usual confidentiality clause in it, and one more.
Clause fourteen.
Neither Elspeth Marr nor any child of hers would represent themselves, publicly or privately, as connected to the Caldwell family or to Caldwell Systems.
I was twenty-one.
I had already taken her name at eighteen, which I did because I was furious with him, and which I have always thought of as my own decision.
It may have been. It may also have been the cheapest way for my mother to comply with something she had signed in the June.
PART 4 — WHAT THE MONEY DID
My mother put me through college.
I have always known that and I have always been proud of it, because she was a woman on her own doing an administrator’s job in Kellow and she found four years of fees somewhere.
She found them in the June of 1999.
That is what the settlement was. Every penny of it went into that and there is a paper trail, and she never took a holiday in her life.
So: my father bought his daughter’s disappearance in 1999, and the price of it paid for her degree, and neither of the two people who did the deal ever told her.
She died in 2016.
I asked her about him perhaps five times in thirty years. Every time, her face did a particular thing and she said something short, and I stopped, because I did not want to be the reason that happened to her face.
Five questions in thirty years. I never asked a sixth.
I do not think she was protecting him for one second. I think she had signed something in 1999 when she was frightened and skint, and by about 2005 she could not work out how to tell her own daughter what she had agreed to.
PART 5 — RECUSAL
Caldwell Systems did not get what it wanted out of that cycle.
Not because of me. I had no hand in any part of it and the recusal is on a file with a date and a time on it that is an hour and a half before my father crossed that gravel.
They did not get it because the technical evaluation went against them, and it went against them for reasons that were in the record in the spring.
He does not believe that. He has told two people I know that his daughter did it.
I have stopped correcting it.
He rang eleven times between the November and the February. I answered the fourth one.
He wanted to talk about my mother’s agreement and he wanted to explain 1999 and the first thing out of his mouth was that she had been very keen on that money.
That was the end of it for me. Not the twenty-six years. That sentence.
Dash wrote to me in the spring, which I did not expect. It is four lines and it is not an apology and it does say that he was told, growing up, that I had chosen not to be part of things.
Do your job and pretend you don’t know us.
He said that four feet out of a queue outside the East Wing, having just taken my invitation out of my hand to check it, with about forty people in earshot.
He was asking me for something he had already bought.

He paid for it in the June of 1999, and the receipt is clause fourteen, and the money went on a degree that put his daughter in that corridor in the first place.
