My ex disappeared six years ago. Then I found her sleeping at JFK with two little girls who had the same eyes as me. Before I could approach them

My phone started vibrating.

My chief financial officer.

The Boston acquisition.

The biggest business deal of my career.

I looked at the screen.

Then I looked at my daughters.

For six years, I had chased money because I believed I had lost the only family I would ever have.

Now my family was sitting three feet away from me.

I answered.

“Cancel the meeting.”

There was silence.

“Marcus, we’re talking about a $42 million acquisition.”

“I know.”

“The sellers won’t wait.”

“Then let them walk.”

“Are you sure?”

I looked at Lily.

She was holding a stuffed rabbit.

Grace was asleep against her mother’s shoulder.

“Yes.”

I ended the call.

Evelyn stared at me.

“You just canceled your biggest deal?”

“Yes.”

“Because of us?”

I shook my head.

“Because I should have been there six years ago.”

PART 6 — THE FIRST DNA TEST

I didn’t want to make assumptions.

Even though every part of me already knew.

I contacted my attorney and arranged a private DNA test.

The results came back forty-eight hours later.

Probability of paternity: 99.9999%.

I stared at the report for several minutes.

Then I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because after six years of believing I had lost everything, I had finally found my daughters.

I called Evelyn.

“They’re mine.”

There was silence.

Then she started crying.

“So are you still angry with me?”

I closed my eyes.

“No.”

“Even after everything?”

“I was angry for six years.”

I looked at the report again.

“But I was angry at the wrong person.”

PART 7 — CONFRONTING MY MOTHER

I went directly to my mother’s house.

She opened the door with her usual calm expression.

“Marcus. What brings you here?”

I placed the legal document on the table.

Her face changed.

“What is this?”

“You tell me.”

She picked it up.

Her hands started shaking.

“Where did you get this?”

“From Evelyn.”

My mother sat down.

For the first time in my life, she looked afraid.

“You separated me from the woman I loved.”

“Marcus—”

“You lied about her.”

She said nothing.

“You told me she abandoned me.”

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

She looked away.

“From making a terrible mistake.”

I slammed my hand onto the table.

“Those two girls are my daughters!”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

Those two words destroyed whatever remained of my trust.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“I knew she was pregnant.”

I stared at her.

“For six years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

My mother finally told me the truth.

She believed Evelyn was only interested in the family fortune.

She had hired a private investigator.

She had discovered Evelyn was pregnant.

Instead of telling me, she paid Evelyn’s landlord, intercepted her mail, and convinced her that I wanted nothing to do with her.

But there was something my mother hadn’t anticipated.

Evelyn had kept evidence.
