My Daughter Brought Home a Tattooed Goth Boy—Then His Phone Exposed My Husband’s 18-Year Secret

  • by

PART 21

Why would Daniel help her move?

His explanation changed.

First he said Laura asked for help.

Then he said their father instructed him.

Then he said he could not remember.

PART 22

Laura’s letters provided another perspective.

She wrote that Daniel told her Michael wanted nothing to do with the

baby.

She also wrote that Daniel brought cash and said it came from Michael.

The money was supposedly payment for disappearing.

PART 23

Michael denied sending it.

Records showed no corresponding withdrawal from his accounts.

But his father had withdrawn a similar amount.

The most likely source became clearer.

Still, the family resisted pretending every unanswered question had

become proven fact.

PART 24

Michael’s father had died six years earlier.

His mother lived in assisted care and had significant memory problems.

There would be no clean confession.

Some pieces of the past would remain incomplete.

PART 25

Then a safe-deposit record surfaced.

Michael’s father had maintained a box until his death.

Daniel became co-access holder shortly before the account closed.

Among estate papers was an inventory.

One line read:

LAURA / CHILD CORRESPONDENCE.

PART 26

Michael stared at it.

“They kept the letters.”

It appeared so.

The letters had not simply vanished in the mail.

At least some had been intercepted and retained.

PART 27

Daniel finally admitted part of what happened.

Their father believed Michael’s future would be ruined.

He told Daniel to convince Laura to leave.

Daniel offered money.

Laura accepted because she believed Michael had rejected her.

PART 28

“Did you tell her the money came from me?” Michael asked.

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

Michael stood.

I thought he might hit him.

He didn’t.

He walked outside.

PART 29

Eli followed several minutes later.

Michael was sitting on the porch steps.

Neither spoke at first.

Then Michael said:

“I should have looked harder.”

Eli answered:

“Yes.”

Michael nodded.

No excuses.

PART 30

That was important.

Michael had been deceived.

He had also surrendered too easily.

Both could be true.

PART 31

Laura had been deceived too.

But she had later learned enough to suspect the truth.

Why hadn’t she contacted Michael?

Her recordings explained some of it.

She was afraid of reopening a conflict that had shaped her entire

adulthood.

She also feared Michael might reject Eli again.

PART 32

Then she became ill.

She began assembling the box for her son.

Not to send him toward Michael.

To give him the choice.

PART 33

One recording said:

Eli, you are not responsible for fixing what adults broke before you

could speak.

If you look for him, do it because you want answers, not because you owe

either of us a reunion.

PART 34

Eli listened to that recording alone.

Afterward he told Michael:

“I don’t know if I want a dad.”

Michael answered:

“Then I won’t ask you to call me one.”

PART 35

They started with coffee.

Once a week.

Public places.

No grand gifts.

No pressure.

Michael learned Eli loved horror films, old motorcycles, digital art,

and classical piano.

The eyeliner remained.

So did the tattoos.

PART 36

One afternoon Michael said:

“I owe you an apology for the first night.”

“For telling me to leave?”

“Yes.”

Eli smiled slightly.

“You looked like you were going to faint.”

“I nearly did.”

PART 37

Michael had recognized Laura in Eli’s face before anyone else did.

That was why he panicked.

Not the clothes.

Not the tattoos.

Not the eyeliner.

For eighteen years, he had imagined a baby.

Then that baby walked into his dining room as a grown boy holding his

daughter’s hand.
