PART 10
Daniel Bennett became the obvious person to call.
Michael did not warn him.
Instead, the next morning he asked him to come over.
Daniel arrived smiling.
Then he saw Eli.
The smile disappeared.
PART 11
He recognized him.
Immediately.
That mattered.
Michael asked:
“When did you last see Laura?”
Daniel answered too quickly.
“Eighteen years ago.”
Eli quietly said:
“My mother has a picture of you from seventeen years ago.”
Daniel stopped.
PART 12
The photograph was shown.
Daniel claimed he did not remember it.
Michael asked about the returned letters.
Daniel denied touching them.
Then Eli produced one envelope.
PART 13
A fingerprint from an old envelope would not magically solve an
eighteen-year-old family mystery.
But handwriting, postal markings, dates, bank records, and surviving
witnesses could still be examined.
The family hired independent counsel.
Eli obtained his own representation.
PART 14
I insisted on that.
He was not a prop in Michael’s redemption story.
He was eighteen.
He deserved advice independent from us.
PART 15
Sophie struggled most.
The boy she had been dating for six weeks appeared to be her
half-brother.
They immediately ended the romantic relationship.
Neither had known when they met.
That distinction mattered emotionally even if it did not make the
discovery less shocking.
PART 16
Sophie cried for two days.
Eli avoided her because he thought she hated him.
Finally she texted:
I don’t hate you. I hate this.
He answered:
Same.
PART 17
That became the beginning of a very different relationship.
Awkward.
Careful.
Sibling-like only much later.
Nobody forced a label immediately.
PART 18
The investigation into the past uncovered a family conflict Michael had
never fully understood.
His parents had strongly opposed Laura.
Daniel, eight years older, handled many family problems for them.
He believed Michael needed to be “saved” from an early marriage.
PART 19
Bank records from that period showed payments from Michael’s father to
Daniel.
Daniel said they were for ordinary expenses.
The timing overlapped with Laura’s move.
That did not prove what the money funded.
PART 20
A former property manager in Asheville remembered Laura.
She also remembered Daniel.
He had helped Laura obtain the apartment.
That contradicted his claim that he had not seen her after Eli’s birth.
