If you let us stay, I’ll take care of your house for free,” I said, standing at a stranger’s gate with my two children and a single backpack. My husband had thrown me out after 18 years of marriage

That afternoon, Gideon asked Gwen one question.

“Do you still have the documents from the apartment sale?”

“I think so.”

She searched through her old belongings.

Eventually she found a battered folder at the bottom of her suitcase.

Inside was the original purchase agreement.

Gideon read it carefully.

Then he stopped.

“What?”

He pointed to a paragraph.

“This says the money was contributed as marital capital.”

Gwen stared at him.

“I never knew what that meant.”

“It means your money wasn’t simply a gift to Douglas.”

Gideon called his attorney.

The attorney confirmed what he suspected.

The original $487,000 had been classified as capital contributed by Gwen toward the formation of the business.

That could give her a significant financial claim.

Gwen whispered:

“So he lied when he said I contributed nothing.”

“Yes.”

“And when he said I wasn’t entitled to anything?”

Gideon looked at her.

“That may be the biggest lie of all.”

PART 6 — DOUGLAS COMES KNOCKING

That evening, a black SUV stopped outside the house.

Gwen recognized it immediately.

Douglas.

He walked toward the front door with Vanessa beside him.

Gideon opened the door before they could knock.

Douglas froze.

“What is she doing here?”

Gideon calmly replied:

“She is staying here.”

Douglas looked past him.

“Gwen, pack your things.”

Gwen stepped into the doorway.

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Douglas glanced at Gideon.

“This is a private family matter.”

Gideon smiled without warmth.

“Not anymore.”

Douglas lowered his voice.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Gideon stepped closer.

“No. I think I made the mistake seventeen years ago.”

Douglas’s face changed.

Gwen saw it.

Fear.

For the first time since their divorce began, Douglas looked genuinely afraid.
