If you let us stay, I’ll take care of your house for free,” I said, standing at a stranger’s gate with my two children and a single backpack. My husband had thrown me out after 18 years of marriage

PART 2 — THE OLD BANK RECORDS

Gideon spent most of the morning in his private office.

Gwen tried not to think about it.

She focused on the children.

Toby had discovered the enormous backyard and was fascinated by the stone fountain. Maisie followed him everywhere, carrying a stuffed rabbit under one arm.

For the first time in weeks, the children were laughing.

Then, around noon, Gideon came downstairs carrying a thick cardboard file box.

His face was different.

“Gwen,” he said.

She turned.

“What did you find?”

He placed the box on the kitchen island.

“These are the original incorporation records for Sterling-Palmer Development.”

Gwen looked at the documents.

Gideon pointed to a bank statement dated eighteen years earlier.

“Your apartment sale.”

Gwen frowned.

“I told you. I sold it.”

“No,” Gideon said quietly. “You sold it for $487,000.”

She nodded.

“That sounds right.”

Gideon slid another document toward her.

“Do you know where that money went?”

Gwen stared at the page.

There was a wire transfer.

$487,000.

Transferred directly into an account belonging to Douglas Palmer.

She looked up.

“I gave it to him.”

“No,” Gideon replied.

His finger moved to the next page.

“Douglas didn’t put the money into the company.”

Gwen’s stomach tightened.

“Then where did it go?”

Gideon looked at her.

“Into an account you didn’t know existed.”

PART 3 — THE HIDDEN ACCOUNT

Gideon called his longtime accountant.

Within an hour, they discovered something even stranger.

The account had been opened under a corporate trust.

The beneficiary wasn’t Douglas.

It wasn’t Gwen.

It wasn’t Sterling-Palmer Development.

It was a woman named Vanessa Reed.

Gwen stared at the name.

“Who is she?”

Gideon didn’t answer immediately.

He opened his laptop and searched the company’s archived personnel records.

Then his eyes widened.

“Vanessa was Douglas’s assistant.”

Gwen felt her hands go cold.

“The woman he’s with now?”

Gideon nodded.

“She worked for him seventeen years ago.”

Gwen sat down.

“That can’t be.”

Gideon turned the laptop toward her.

There was a photograph from an old company Christmas party.

Douglas stood in the center.

Vanessa stood beside him.

And on her finger was a diamond ring.

Gwen recognized it immediately.

It was the ring Douglas had claimed was his mother’s.

The ring he had given Gwen during their tenth anniversary.

She stared at the screen.

“He gave me a ring that belonged to her?”

“No,” Gideon said.

“He gave you a ring he bought for her.”

Gwen closed her eyes.

For eighteen years, she had believed she was building a family with a man who had simply become selfish.

Now she was beginning to understand something much darker.

Douglas had been lying from the beginning.

PART 4 — THE SECOND COMPANY

Gideon wasn’t finished.

He contacted an attorney and requested corporate registry records.

The results were disturbing.

Three years after Sterling-Palmer Development was founded, Douglas had created another company.

Palmer Strategic Holdings LLC.

Gwen had never heard of it.

Gideon had never heard of it either.

But the records showed millions of dollars moving between the two companies.

Gideon stared at the screen.

“He’s been siphoning money.”

“How much?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Then the accountant called.

They had found something.

A transfer of $2.4 million had been made from the company to Palmer Strategic Holdings.

Another $1.8 million.

Then $3.1 million.

Over the years, the amounts had accumulated.

Gideon leaned back.

“That’s more than seven million dollars.”

Gwen felt sick.

“Can he do that?”

“Not legally without proper disclosure.”

She whispered:

“He told me I wasn’t entitled to anything.”

Gideon looked directly at her.

“He may have been trying to make sure you never discovered what you’re actually entitled to.”
