Step 1: Prepare the ginger
Wash the fresh ginger thoroughly. You can peel it if desired, although peeling isn’t essential.
Slice the ginger into thin pieces to help release its flavor.
Step 2: Boil the water
Pour 6 cups of water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.
Add the sliced ginger.
Step 3: Simmer
Reduce the heat to low and gently simmer the ginger for approximately 15–20 minutes.
The longer it simmers, the stronger and spicier the drink will become.
Step 4: Strain
Remove the saucepan from the heat.
Pour the ginger water through a fine-mesh strainer into a heat-safe container or large jug. Discard the ginger pieces.
Step 5: Add lemon
Allow the drink to cool slightly, then add fresh lemon juice.
If you prefer a sweeter flavor, stir in a small amount of honey while the drink is still warm.
Step 6: Chill or serve warm
For a warm drink, serve immediately.
For iced ginger water, allow it to cool completely and refrigerate it for several hours. Serve over ice with lemon slices and fresh mint.
Storage
Keep the prepared ginger water covered in the refrigerator and use it within 3–4 days.
Simple Daily Drink
Pour a glass over ice or enjoy it warm. It can be a flavorful way to increase your fluid intake without adding much sugar, especially if you skip the honey.
Tip: If you’re sensitive to spicy or acidic drinks, start with a smaller serving and dilute it with additional water. Ginger can cause heartburn or stomach discomfort in some people, particularly in larger amounts.
