HE THREW HIS PREGNANT WIFE OUT FOR CHEATING—18 MONTHS LATER, HE FOUND HER HOMELESS WITH TWINS WHO HAD HIS EYES

  • by

Ashley arrived at the mansion that evening wearing the same confident smile she had worn throughout their relationship.

Michael was waiting in his study.

On the desk lay copies of the letters, screenshots, delivery records, and financial documents David had collected.

Ashley looked at the papers.

Her smile faltered.

“What is all this?”

“Sit down.”

“Michael, you’re being ridiculous.”

“Sit down, Ashley.”

She slowly lowered herself into the chair.

Michael slid Emily’s letter across the desk.

Ashley glanced at it.

Then she looked away.

“Do you remember receiving this?”

“No.”

“Your signature is on the delivery record.”

“I sign for things all the time.”

“You received a letter telling me I was going to be a father. Why didn’t I see it?”

Ashley said nothing.

Michael placed another page in front of her.

“What about these notes?”

Her face grew pale.

“Where did you get those?”

“That’s not an answer.”

She stood abruptly.

“You’re letting Emily manipulate you again!”

“Emily didn’t create these documents.”

“She wants your money!”

“Then why didn’t she contact me after I found her on the highway?”

Ashley opened her mouth.

No answer came.

Michael continued.

“Why did you tell me that she had been unfaithful? Why were the screenshots edited? Why did you repeatedly ask about my family trust before the divorce?”

Ashley looked at the door.

Michael stood.

“Please don’t leave until we finish talking.”

She turned toward him.

“You owe me, Michael! I’ve spent eighteen months helping you rebuild your life!”

“You helped me destroy mine.”

“That’s not fair!”

“Neither was what you did to Emily.”

Ashley began crying.

But Michael had learned that tears alone didn’t establish the truth.

“I need you to answer the questions,” he said.

For several seconds, she stared at him.

Then her expression changed.

The sadness disappeared, replaced by anger.

“Fine. You want the truth?”

Michael remained silent.

“Emily was always between us. You were supposed to leave her eventually. I thought that once you understood what kind of woman she was, you would finally move on.”

“Even if she hadn’t cheated?”

Ashley said nothing.

Michael shook his head.

“You knew I wanted children. You knew how much Emily meant to me. And you still helped me throw her away.”

“You would have left her sooner or later!”

“That’s not your decision.”

Ashley stepped closer.

“Michael, think about the wedding. Think about the business connections. Think about everything we’ve planned.”

He looked at her.

“I’ve canceled the wedding.”

Her face froze.

“What?”

“The wedding is canceled. You won’t be marrying me.”

She began shaking her head.

“You can’t do that!”

“I can choose not to marry someone I no longer trust.”

She reached for his arm.

He stepped back.

“This conversation is over. My attorney will contact you about any outstanding matters.”

Ashley stared at him in disbelief.

Then she picked up her handbag and walked out.

Michael remained in the study.

He felt no satisfaction.

There would be legal and financial consequences to resolve, and those would have to be handled properly.

But one thing was certain.

He would not build another marriage on a lie.

And he would not allow the woman he had once loved to remain homeless while he enjoyed the life he had helped her lose.

PART 8: THE MEETING ON HIGHWAY 17

Three days later, Michael met Emily at a family-support center.

He arrived alone.

No expensive car waited outside.

No assistant accompanied him.

He carried only a small bag containing two baby blankets and a pair of toys he had purchased after asking the staff what might be appropriate.

Emily was sitting near the window when he entered.

She looked healthier than she had beside the highway, but exhaustion still showed in her face.

The twins were sleeping in a double stroller beside her.

Michael stopped several feet away.

“Hello, Emily.”

She looked up.

“Hello.”

He swallowed.

“Thank you for agreeing to see me.”

“I agreed because we need to discuss the children.”

“I understand.”

He sat opposite her.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Michael said, “I had the DNA test done. David explained the results to me.”

Emily nodded.

“I know.”

“They’re mine.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the stroller.

“Can I see them?”

Emily studied his face.

Then she nodded.

“Quietly. They’re sleeping.”

Michael approached the stroller.

He looked at Noah first.

The little boy opened his eyes and stared at him.

Michael covered his mouth.

Then he looked at Grace.

She moved her tiny fingers beneath the blanket.

“They’re beautiful,” he whispered.

Emily looked away.

“I wish you had been there.”

Michael turned toward her.

“I know.”

“No, Michael. You don’t know.”

Her voice trembled.

“You don’t know what it was like to discover I was carrying twins while I was struggling to find somewhere to sleep. You don’t know what it was like to give birth without you. You don’t know what it was like to watch our children grow without knowing whether their father wanted them.”

Michael lowered his head.

“You’re right.”

“I wrote to you.”

“I know.”

“I tried calling.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you answer?”

He couldn’t hide from that question.

“Because I believed the evidence Ashley showed me. I was angry, and I wanted to believe that leaving you was the right decision.”

Emily wiped her eyes.

“And you never thought to ask me again?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I have no excuse.”

She studied him for several seconds.

Then she asked, “Are you sorry because you hurt me, or because you discovered the children are yours?”

Michael felt the question settle heavily between them.

“Both,” he admitted. “But I was wrong about you long before I knew about the twins. You deserved to be heard, and I refused to listen.”

Emily looked toward the window.

“I loved you, Michael.”

He closed his eyes.

“I loved you too.”

“But love isn’t enough when someone refuses to trust you.”

“I know.”

She turned back toward him.

“I won’t promise that we’ll ever get back together. I’m not ready to trust you again.”

Michael nodded.

“I won’t ask you to.”

“And the children won’t be used to repair our marriage.”

“They shouldn’t be.”

Emily’s expression softened slightly.

“If you want to be their father, you can start by being consistent. Visit when you say you will. Help with their expenses. Learn what they need. Don’t disappear when things become difficult.”

Michael looked at his children.

“I will.”

Emily didn’t reach for his hand.

She didn’t forgive him that afternoon.

But she allowed him to sit beside the stroller and hold Noah for a few minutes while she watched carefully.

For Michael, it was more than he deserved.

And for the first time since their separation, he understood that rebuilding trust would require something far more important than money.

It would require him to show up.

Again and again.
