Two days later, David called Michael with an urgent update.
“We found a record of a letter sent by Emily to your mansion shortly after the twins were born.”
Michael stood up.
“A letter?”
“Yes. The household delivery records indicate it arrived, but there’s no record of it being forwarded to you.”
“Who signed for it?”
David gave him the name.
“Ashley.”
Michael felt the room tilt.
“Are you certain?”
“The signature appears to match hers. We’re obtaining the original delivery records and checking the remaining evidence.”
Michael ended the call and immediately searched the house.
He began with the office.
Then the library.
Then the filing cabinets in the guest room.
Finally, he went to the storage room where Ashley had kept several boxes of documents during the renovation.
The third box contained a stack of envelopes.
Some were old invoices.
Others were wedding invitations and greeting cards.
At the bottom sat a white envelope bearing Emily’s handwriting.
Michael’s name was written across the front.
His hands began to shake.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter dated several months earlier.
Michael,
I don’t know whether you’ll read this, but I have to try.
I’m pregnant. It’s twins.
I tried calling you, but I can’t reach you. I tried contacting your lawyer, but I haven’t been able to speak to you directly.
I don’t want money. I don’t want to fight with you.
I simply want you to know that you’re going to be a father.
I don’t know what happened to our marriage, but I know I never cheated on you.
I loved you, and a part of me still does.
If you ever want to meet our children, please contact me.
Emily.
Michael lowered the letter.
For a moment, he couldn’t breathe.
He read it again.
Then he sank into a chair.
His wife had tried to tell him.
His children had existed for months without him knowing.
And the letter had been sitting in his own house.
He searched the box more carefully.
Beneath the correspondence lay a small notebook.
Its pages contained scattered notes in Ashley’s handwriting.
Michael opened it.
He saw his own name.
Then Emily’s.
Then a list of dates.
One entry stopped him cold.
“Once the divorce is finalized, he’ll finally be free of Emily. Keep the family trust issue moving before he starts asking questions.”
Michael stared at the page.
There were other notes referring to confidential business documents and meetings with a financial adviser.
Some entries appeared connected to the wedding expenses and Ashley’s plans after their marriage.
The notes didn’t establish the entire truth, but they raised serious concerns.
He photographed each page and sent the images to David.
Then he called Ashley.
She answered cheerfully.
“Hello, darling!”
“Come to the mansion. Now.”
“What happened?”
“I found something that belongs to you.”
Silence.
Then she said, “Michael, you’re frightening me.”
“Good,” he replied quietly. “Perhaps now you understand how Emily felt when you helped convince me that she was lying.”
He ended the call.
For the first time in eighteen months, Michael understood that the evidence against Emily might have been part of a much larger deception.
But he needed one final answer.
Were Noah and Grace really his children?
He called David.
“Arrange a legal paternity test. And find Emily.”
“We’re already working on it.”
Michael looked again at the letter.
Then he whispered the words that had haunted him since he saw the twins.
“I should have listened.”
PART 6: THE DNA TEST
David found Emily through a family-support organization that had helped her after the twins were born.
She agreed to speak with him, but she refused to meet Michael immediately.
She had one condition.
“The children come first,” she told David. “I’m not putting them through another painful situation because Michael suddenly feels guilty.”
David understood.
He arranged a meeting at a neutral location with Emily’s consent and helped coordinate the legal procedures necessary for a paternity test.
Michael waited several days for the results.
Those were among the longest days of his life.
He barely slept.
He canceled his remaining wedding preparations.
He stopped answering Ashley’s calls.
He returned to the divorce records repeatedly, looking for signs he should have noticed.
He remembered Emily’s tears.
Her insistence that she had never betrayed him.
The way she had looked at him when he told her to leave.
And now he remembered the twins’ eyes.
When David finally called, Michael answered before the first ring had finished.
“We have the result.”
Michael gripped the desk.
“And?”
“The results confirm that you are the biological father of both children.”
Michael closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.
Then the tears came.
He cried for the five months he had missed.
For the pregnancy he hadn’t witnessed.
For the birth of his children.
For Emily’s loneliness.
For the terrible mistake he had made when he chose to believe a series of screenshots instead of asking the woman he loved for the truth.
“What happens now?” he whispered.
David spoke carefully.
“Now you respect Emily’s boundaries. You make appropriate arrangements for the children. And we continue investigating the evidence concerning Ashley.”
Michael nodded, even though David couldn’t see him.
“I want to meet my children.”
“Emily will decide when and how that happens.”
Michael accepted that.
For eighteen months, he had made decisions about Emily without listening to her.
He would not make another decision on her behalf.
He needed to earn the right to be involved in his children’s lives.
And that would take time.
