Tonsil Stones: What Causes Those White Bumps in Your Throat and How to Remove Them Safely

  • by

Have you ever noticed small white or yellowish lumps at the back of your throat? Perhaps you have persistent bad breath even after brushing your teeth, or you sometimes feel as though something is stuck in your throat. These symptoms may be caused by tonsil stones, also known as tonsilloliths.

Tonsil stones are relatively common and are usually harmless. However, they can cause discomfort, unpleasant breath, and irritation in some people. Understanding why they develop and how to manage them safely can help you protect your oral health.

What Are Tonsil Stones?

Tonsil stones are small, hardened deposits that form inside the tiny pockets and crevices of your tonsils. Your tonsils are two areas of soft tissue located at the back of your throat that play a role in your immune system.

The surface of the tonsils contains small folds and openings called crypts. Food particles, dead cells, mucus, and bacteria can collect in these spaces. Over time, the trapped material may harden as minerals accumulate, forming white or yellowish stones.

Some tonsil stones are tiny and difficult to notice. Others can become larger and more visible, resembling the bumps shown in the image.

Although the appearance may be unpleasant, tonsil stones are not usually a sign of a dangerous illness.
