Meanwhile, Vanessa returned to Dallas.
She walked into the house she believed belonged entirely to her.
She opened a bottle of expensive wine.
Then she sat behind Michael’s desk.
For the first time, she smiled.
She had everything.
The house.
The business.
The accounts.
The cars.
Or so she believed.
She called the family attorney.
“I need the final paperwork completed immediately.”
The attorney sounded nervous.
“Mrs. Hale, there is a problem.”
“What problem?”
“Your husband’s estate isn’t ready to be distributed.”
“Why?”
“There is a trust.”
Vanessa froze.
“What trust?”
“A trust established for Noah.”
She stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.
“That child doesn’t have anything.”
“He does.”
“How much?”
The attorney hesitated.
“Several million dollars.”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Who controls it?”
“Daniel Carter.”
She immediately recognized the name.
Michael’s friend.
The man she had always disliked.
“Where is Noah?”
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa slammed the phone down.
Then she picked it up again.
She called the local police.
“I need to report a missing child.”
PART 6 — THE SEARCH
The next morning, a police officer arrived at Grace’s home.
Grace opened the door.
“Mrs. Miller?”
“Yes?”
“I’m Officer Harris. We’re looking for a boy named Noah Hale.”
Grace’s stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“His stepmother reported him missing.”
Noah appeared behind Grace.
The officer’s expression changed.
“There he is.”
Noah stepped forward.
“My stepmother abandoned me.”
Officer Harris looked surprised.
“She told us you ran away after the funeral.”
“No.”
Noah shook his head.
“She drove me somewhere and told me to walk to town.”
Grace immediately handed the officer her phone.
“I called the number his father left him.”
The officer listened.
Then his eyes widened.
“Daniel Carter?”
“Yes.”
The officer stared at Noah.
“Do you know who that is?”
“No.”
“He’s a licensed private investigator.”
Grace looked shocked.
Noah looked confused.
“Why would my dad leave his number?”
The officer didn’t answer.
Instead, he asked Noah to tell him exactly what happened.
Noah did.
Every detail.
The dirt road.
The abandonment.
The words Vanessa had spoken.
Everything.
The officer wrote it all down.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“I don’t think you’re a missing child.”
He looked toward Grace.
“I think you’re a child who was deliberately abandoned.”
