That same evening my mother called.
— Daughter, the neighbor said you have eight. Is that true?
– Is it true.
— Did the doctors make a mistake?
– Yes.
Mom started crying.
– I will come.
– Mom, there’s no need. It’s already cramped in here.
« I’ll come, » she repeated firmly. « You have eight children, and you’re still thinking about how not to inconvenience anyone. »
Two days later she arrived with two bags of food and a huge bag of knitted socks.
Andrey met her at the entrance.
– Hello, Elena Pavlovna.
« Hello, son-in-law. Now you’ll learn not only how to swaddle babies, but also how to peel potatoes. »
He smiled for the first time in a long time.
Stage Six: The Secret in the Medical Record
After three weeks, Lev began to breathe on his own.
It happened at night. The nurse on duty called me and asked me to come to the department.
I ran up without even having time to button my coat.
“Look,” said the doctor.
Lev lay in an incubator without a breathing mask. He had small transparent tubes on his face, but he was breathing on his own.
I placed my palm on the glass.
– My boy…
The doctor smiled.
– He is the weakest, but it seems he is the most stubborn.
— Why wasn’t it seen at the last ultrasound?
The doctor sighed.
« We re-examined the images. The eighth fetus was located behind the other seven, almost completely obscured. With so many babies and such a limited space, error is, unfortunately, possible. »
– Why was he born smaller than the others?
« He was getting fewer nutrients. But the main thing now is that he’s stable. »
I looked at Lev and thought about how easy it would have been for him to disappear from our story. If the doctors hadn’t noticed him at the last moment, if his heart hadn’t been beating, if he hadn’t screamed…
He was the child no one expected, but without whom our family would never have been complete.
Stage Seven – The House That Had to Be Built Again
The children were discharged gradually.
Vera and Misha came home first, then Nika, Ilya, and the others. Each visit turned into a special event.
By the time Lev was discharged, our apartment already resembled a small medical center.
There were two cribs in the living room, three more in the bedroom, and the rest were in the nursery. In the kitchen, sterilizers were running, bottles were drying, and the refrigerator was filled with containers of milk.
Andrey and I hardly slept.
“I can’t understand who is crying now,” he once said.
– This is Ilya.
– Why do you know so confidently?
« He cries with pauses. Vera doesn’t have pauses. »
Andrey looked at me with respect.
– You are incredible.
– I’m just a mother.
– No. You are a person who does the impossible every day.
Gradually, we learned to share responsibilities. Mom came over on weekends. The neighbors helped with the cooking. A charity funded specialized equipment for Lev.
But the hardest part wasn’t feeding the children and putting them to bed. The hardest part was remembering each other.
One night I said to Andrey:
— It seems to me that we have become workers in a family dormitory.
He silently turned off the light in the hallway and put the kettle on.
— The children are sleeping at grandma’s today. I made arrangements.
– What?
« Mom will take them to her place for a few hours. We’ll have dinner together. »
We sat in the kitchen, holding hands, and for the first time in months, we talked about something other than medication, weight, and feeding.
“I was afraid that I would lose you,” Andrey admitted.
– You could have lost me even before the children.
– I know.
– But you stayed.
– I won’t leave.
I looked at him.
— Don’t promise forever. Just be there today.
– Will.
Stage Eight – The Truth Everyone Heard
Six months later, the hospital held a meeting for journalists. The doctors wanted to talk about a rare case of octuplets being born.
I was asked to speak.
I walked up to the microphone holding Lev in my arms. The other children were nearby in special strollers.
« A lot of people ask how we cope, » I said. « Honestly? We don’t always cope. Sometimes we get tired, cry, and don’t know what to do next. But children don’t expect us to be perfect. They need us to keep showing up, holding their hands, and believing in them. »
The hall became quiet.
« And I also want to say: my youngest son came into our lives unexpectedly. The doctors only found out about him just before he was born. But he wasn’t a mistake. He wasn’t an extra. He was simply unnoticed—until the moment he announced himself with his first cry. »
The lion stirred in my arms.
« Wait, » I whispered and smiled. « It seems he wants everyone to hear him again. »
The audience laughed and applauded.
Andrey stood nearby, holding one of his daughters. He looked at us as if he still couldn’t believe this was his life.
Stage Nine – Eight Names
A year after the children were born, we had a small celebration.
There were photographs of each child hanging on the wall.
Vera is calm and attentive.
Misha is loud and energetic.
Nika is smiling.
Ilya is serious.
Sonya is curious.
Petya is stubborn.
Lisa is affectionate.
And Leo is small, but surprisingly strong.
The guests took turns picking up the children, laughing and wishing them good health.
I sat by the window, watching this hustle and bustle.
Andrey came up with a cup of tea.
— What are you thinking about?
— About that first ultrasound.
— When did they say there were seven of them?
— Yes. I was sure then that I already knew everything about my life.
— And then Leo appeared.
— He reminded that life can always surprise.
Andrey sat down next to me.
— If you were given the chance to go back, would you change anything?
I looked at the children.
— I would ask the doctors to check everything again.
We both laughed.
Then I picked Lev up. He was already holding his head up confidently and looking at me intently with his big gray eyes.
« You were the eighth, » I whispered. « But you were never the odd one out. »
He smiled.
And at that moment I realized: that very unexpected eighth cry became the most important sound in our lives.
Because sometimes fate hides the most precious things until the last second.
And then he silences the whole world to hear him.
