The 5-Day Onion Water Trick for Blurry Vision: Does It Really Work?

  • by

Red onions are popular in kitchens around the world because of their distinctive flavor, beautiful color, and nutritional properties. They contain natural antioxidants and plant compounds that contribute to a balanced diet.

Recently, a popular home remedy has claimed that soaking red onion in water for five days can completely cure blurry vision, restore sharp eyesight, and make the eyes look 20 years younger.

But is this remedy really effective?

The truth is that there is no scientific evidence that onion water can reverse blurry vision, remove cataracts, repair the retina, or restore lost eyesight. Nevertheless, onions can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet that provides nutrients important for overall health.

Let’s explore the claim, understand what affects eyesight, and discover safer ways to support eye health.

1. Why Are Red Onions Considered Healthy?

Red onions contain several naturally occurring compounds, including:

  • Quercetin, a plant flavonoid with antioxidant properties.
  • Anthocyanins, which contribute to their red-purple color.
  • Vitamin C, which contributes to normal immune function.
  • Sulfur-containing compounds found naturally in onions.

These substances have attracted scientific interest because of their antioxidant properties. However, eating onions does not mean that these compounds will reverse eye diseases or restore damaged vision.

2. The Simple Red Onion Water Recipe

If you enjoy the taste of onions, you can prepare a simple onion-infused water for culinary use. It is not an eye treatment.

Ingredients

  • ¼ small red onion
  • 1 glass (250 ml) of drinking water
  • A few drops of lemon juice (optional)

Preparation

Step 1: Choose a fresh onion

Select a firm red onion without soft spots or signs of spoilage.

Step 2: Remove the outer skin

Peel the onion and rinse it under clean running water.

Step 3: Slice the onion

Cut a small portion into thin slices.

Step 4: Add the water

Place the slices in a clean glass or covered container and pour in the drinking water.

Step 5: Allow it to infuse

Cover the container and refrigerate for approximately 30–60 minutes.

Step 6: Strain the mixture

Remove the onion slices and pour the infused water into a clean glass.

Step 7: Enjoy as a food beverage

If you like the flavor, add a few drops of lemon juice. Discard any leftovers after 24 hours.

There is no proven five-day treatment schedule, and this drink should never be placed in or around the eyes.
