We named Malcolm’s middle name Odessa’s actual first name, Ruth, a small, deliberate way of finally letting a hidden ancestor exist openly in a family she’d spent her entire adult life protecting through careful, painful silence.

Owen and Malcolm are three now, considerably less interested in genetics than they are in dinosaurs and whatever cartoon currently holds their attention, though I imagine, someday, we’ll sit them both down properly and tell them the whole story — not as a secret anymore, the way it existed for four generations before them, but as something worth understanding and carrying forward openly.
