Julian stood frozen at his table. The tailored navy suit that had given him an air of invincibility just ten minutes ago now seemed to shrink around him. His hands rested on the wood desk, but I could see the subtle tremble in his knuckles.
Behind him, my mother’s proud posture shattered. Brenda leaned forward, her string of pearls clinking against her cream jacket as she tried to catch Julian’s eye. Jasmine’s smirk dissolved into a expression of sharp, anxious confusion. Uncle Trent stopped tapping his expensive watch and slowly pulled his hands back, as if trying to make himself invisible.
They didn’t know what was in the folder.
They only knew that the look on Judge Mercer’s face was the legal equivalent of a death sentence.
“Your Honor,” Julian’s attorney, Arthur Pendelton, interjected quickly, stepping forward to shield his client. “Whatever dramatic surprise opposing counsel is attempting to introduce, it was not properly disclosed during pre-trial discovery. It should be ruled inadmissible immediately.”
