My hand trembled as I folded the cheap notepad into a thin strip.
“Caleb’s handwriting,” I whispered, pressing the inked edge to the paper, “on the insurance fraud forms.”
Dr. Marquez glanced at me, her brow furrowing under the fluorescent glare.
“You’re sure?” she asked, voice low.
I nodded, feeling the plastered legs shift beneath me.
“I recognized the slant, the pressure on the downstroke—exactly how he signed the consent waiver.”
She took the note, tucked it into the pocket of her lab coat, and slipped it into the side drawer of the bedside cabinet.
“I’m calling security,” she said, fingers already dialing.
The cuff of my wristband buzzed faintly as the nurse entered, unaware.
“Do you need anything?” she asked, eyes scanning the monitor.
I forced a weak smile, “Just… a little quiet.”
Outside the door, footsteps echoed—a guard, then a second, then a third.
Dr. Marquez’s voice softened, “Stay calm. I’ve arranged a covert evacuation. We’ll get you out before they realize.”
My heart thudded against the bandages as the hallway lights flickered, the scent of antiseptic mixing with a faint metallic tang.
Alarms blare, Caleb restrains Rebecca; Dr. Marquez overrides the system
The first alarm shrieked, red lights bathing the room in an urgent glow.
Caleb lunged, a cold grip on my forearm, his fingers digging into the bandage.
“Don’t move,” he hissed, pulling a pistol from his coat—a flash of steel against the sterile ceiling.
My pulse raced, the monitor’s flatline flickering cruelly across the ceiling.
Dr. Marquez surged forward, her coat flaring as she slammed the emergency code button.
“Code Blue—All units,” she shouted, voice steady despite the chaos.
The security team burst in, rifles drawn, but Caleb’s eyes darted, calculating.
He whispered into the gun, “You think you can stop this?”
Behind the glass wall, a hidden camera whirred, capturing every word.
Caleb’s confession spilled, “I’m not your husband. I’m an operative. The syndicate wants the treatment—fast. We’ve been feeding on their patients, stealing the serum. This hospital is just a stepping stone.”
His breath was ragged, the gun trembling.
Dr. Marquez pressed the override, the monitor sputtering back to life, the beeping steady again.
She shoved me toward the emergency exit, her hand gripping mine with unexpected strength.
As I stumbled past the doorway, the screen above the doors flashed: SECURITY BREACH – EVACUATE.
The alarms faded into a distant wail, and the hidden lens kept recording, the truth now captured in cold, unblinking steel.
