I Married an Old Man to Save My Father, But the Truth Uncovered in the Night Shattered Everything I Knew

Confronting My Father

As I sat on the edge of my bed, the recording played in my mind, the unease coiling tighter in my stomach. I couldn’t shake the dread that settled like a weight on my chest. I needed answers, but how could I confront him without revealing the truth I already knew?

“Dad?” I finally called out, my voice wavering. He was sitting in the living room, a shadow of his former self, but recovering. “Can we talk?”

He turned, his face lighting up with a smile that felt wrong. “Of course, sweetheart. How are you holding up?”

“I’m fine,” I lied, forcing a smile. “But… I need to know about him—Victor. You said you knew him from school, right?”

My father’s expression shifted slightly, fading into something more serious. “Victor? Yes, a brilliant mind, but he always kept to himself. We lost touch after graduation.”

A brilliant mind. It felt more like a warning that echoed in my head. “You didn’t know he was… involved in anything strange?”

“Strange? No. He was just eccentric.” My father shrugged, dismissing my fears. “Why do you ask?”

Suddenly, the realization hit me. My father was still in the dark about the true cost of my sacrifice. He had no idea what I had given up—no idea how deeply I had plunged into this world of shadows and secrets.

“I just… I don’t trust him,” I finally said, my voice barely above a whisper. “Can’t you see what he’s doing?”

“He saved my life,” my father replied, his tone softening as he put a hand on his chest, a gesture both reassuring and suffocating. “You shouldn’t worry about this. Just focus on your health.”

But fear gnawed at me, a relentless beast, and I had to know more. Victor was not just an old acquaintance; I needed to understand what kind of man he truly was. Who was this old man now living in my house, controlling my life?

I stood, determination pouring through me like ice water. “I need to talk to him.”

Confronting Victor

Victor was in his study, the dim light casting long shadows across his cluttered desk. I felt a tremor in my hands as I approached. The air was thick with the scent of chemicals and something underlying—like burnt rubber.

“Victor,” I started, my voice steady despite the whirlwind in my chest. “We need to talk about the pills.”

He looked up, a hint of surprise flickering across his features. “The pills? They’re just a mild sedative, to help you sleep.”

His smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Why do you ask? Are you having trouble?”

“I know it’s more than that,” I pressed, heart pounding. “Why do I feel so different? What do they actually do?”

Victor’s expression hardened, the warm façade slipping. “It’s best not to question the science behind it, dear. You’re healing. Isn’t that enough?”

“I want to understand!” I insisted, rising anger fueling my voice. “You can’t just keep me in the dark like this! I refuse to be a part of your experiments!”

His eyes narrowed, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of something dangerous within them. “You are exactly where you need to be.”

With that, I turned on my heel, the dread suffocating me. I had to see what he did after I took the pills. It was time to take action. That night, I made plans to stay awake and observe. I would not be a pawn any longer.

As the clock struck midnight, I crept into the shadows of the hallway, my heart pounding in anticipation. The house felt eerily quiet, as if it were holding its breath, waiting for the truth to unfold.

Every creak of the floorboards sent chills down my spine. I settled into a dark corner, my eyes fixated on the bedroom door. I could hardly breathe, the anticipation electrifying. What would I uncover?

Minutes turned to hours, and just as fatigue threatened to overtake me, I saw the door creak open. Victor stepped in, holding a small vial of shimmering liquid. My breath caught as I wondered what he was about to do.

I froze, my heart racing as I strained to hear his quiet muttering to himself, a litany of scientific terminology mingled with something darker.

Then, a sudden movement caught my eye. In the corner of the room lay a small, sleeping animal—one of his experiments. In that moment, realization struck me like a thunderclap. I was ensnared in something horrific.

I took a deep breath, ready to record the details of his madness when suddenly his gaze snapped to my hiding place. “Who’s there?” he snarled, eyes narrowing. “Show yourself!”

Before I could react, he lunged at me. “No one leaves my house once they know the truth!”

I screamed.
