I built my whole life around this child.
She grew into a lively, funny, and stubborn girl who pretended not to care when I applauded too loudly at her football games, but who scanned the stands to make sure I was there.
At 16, she had inherited my sarcasm and her mother’s eyes. (I only knew this because of a small photo the police had given to the social worker).
After school, she would climb onto the passenger seat, throw her backpack on the floor, and say things like, « Okay, Dad, don’t get mad, but I got a B+ on my chemistry test. »
At 16, she had inherited my sarcasm and her mother’s eyes.
« That’s good, my darling. »
« No, it’s tragic. Melissa got an A, and she’s not even studying. » She rolled her eyes theatrically, but I could see the smile forming on her lips.
She was my whole heart.
During that time, I wasn’t going out much with girls. When you’ve seen people disappear, you become selective about who you let get close to you.
She was my whole heart.
But last year, I met Marisa at the hospital. She was a nurse practitioner, refined, intelligent, and with a quirky sense of humor. She didn’t bat an eye when I told her anecdotes about my job. She remembered Avery’s favorite drink. When I finished late, she offered to drive Avery to his debate club.
Avery was cautious with her, but not cold. That seemed like progress.
After eight months, I started to think that maybe I could do it. That maybe I could have a partner without losing what I already had.
I bought a ring and kept it in a small velvet box in my bedside table drawer.
Perhaps I could have a partner without losing what
I already had it.
Then, one evening, Marisa showed up at my door looking as if she had witnessed a crime. She was standing in my living room, her phone in her hand.
« Your daughter is hiding something TERRIBLE from you. Look! »
On his screen, I could see a surveillance video. A hooded figure entered my room, went straight to my dresser, and opened the bottom drawer. That’s where I kept my safe. It contained emergency money and documents related to Avery’s college fund.
On his screen, he could see a surveillance video.
On his screen, he could see a surveillance video.
The figure crouched down, fiddled with the safe for about 30 seconds, then the door opened. The person then reached inside and pulled out a wad of banknotes.
My stomach knotted so quickly I felt dizzy. Marisa scrolled to another video. Same hoodie. Same figure.
« I didn’t want to believe it, » she said in a soft but firm voice. « But your daughter has been acting strangely lately. And now this. »
Then, the person reached inside and pulled out a wad of banknotes.
I couldn’t speak. My brain was racing, trying to find a plausible explanation.
« Avery wouldn’t do that, » I whispered.
Marisa’s face tightened. « You say that because you’re blind when it comes to her. »
That sentence shocked me. I jumped up so fast my chair scraped the floor. « I have to talk to him. »
Marisa grabbed my wrist. « No. Not yet. If you confront her now, she’ll deny everything or run away. You have to act intelligently. »
« Avery wouldn’t do that. »
« That’s my daughter. »
« And I’m trying to protect you, » Marisa retorted sharply. « She’s 16. You can’t keep pretending she’s perfect. »
I freed my wrist and went upstairs. Avery was in her room, headphones on, bent over her homework. She looked up when I opened the door and smiled at me as if everything was normal.
« Hi, Dad. How are you? You look pale. »
I was speechless for a moment. I stood there, trying to connect the girl in front of me with the figure in that video.
« She is 16 years old. »
You can’t keep pretending she’s perfect.
Finally, I managed to say, « Avery, did you come into my room when I wasn’t there? »
His smile faded. « What? »
« Just answer me, that’s all. »
She sat up, defensively. « No. Why would I do that? »
My hands were trembling. « Something’s missing from my safe. »
Her face changed expression… first confusion, then fear, then anger. And that anger was so characteristic of Avery that it almost broke me.
« Something is missing from my safe. »
« Wait… you’re accusing me, Dad? » she retorted.
« I don’t want to, » I replied honestly. « I just need an explanation. Because I saw someone in a grey hoodie enter my room on the CCTV footage. »
« A grey hoodie? » She stared at me for a long moment, then got up and went to her closet. She took out empty hangers, moved some jackets aside, then turned back to me.
« My gray hoodie, » she said. « The one that’s too big and that I wear all the time. It’s been missing for two days. »
I blinked. « What? »
She stared at me for a long time,
then she got up and walked
