How to Deep Clean Your Oven Without Harsh Chemicals

  • by

A dirty oven can make your entire kitchen feel less clean, especially when grease, burnt food, and stubborn spills have accumulated over time. Fortunately, you don’t need expensive chemical cleaners to restore your oven. With a few simple household ingredients and the right cleaning technique, you can remove baked-on grease and food residue while keeping your kitchen cleaning routine simple and affordable.

Before you begin, make sure the oven is completely switched off and cold. Remove all trays, pans, thermometers, and oven racks. It is also a good idea to open a window or turn on your kitchen ventilation while cleaning.

Start by removing loose crumbs and pieces of burnt food from the bottom of the oven. A dry cloth or paper towel works well for this. For larger pieces stuck to the surface, use a plastic scraper or silicone spatula. Avoid using sharp metal objects because they can scratch the oven’s interior.

Next, prepare a simple natural cleaning paste. Mix about half a cup of baking soda with three tablespoons of water until you have a thick paste. If your oven has a lot of greasy buildup, you can add a few drops of mild dish soap. The mixture should be thick enough to spread easily without running.

Apply the paste over the dirty areas of the oven, concentrating on the bottom, sides, back wall, and areas where grease has accumulated. Avoid applying the mixture directly to heating elements, vents, electrical components, or gas openings. You don’t need to cover every surface perfectly; focus on the areas with visible grease and baked-on food.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when cleaning an oven is scrubbing immediately. Instead, allow the baking soda paste to sit for several hours. For heavy buildup, leaving it overnight gives the paste more time to soften hardened grease and food residue. This can make the cleaning process much easier and reduce the amount of physical scrubbing required.

While the paste is working, clean the oven racks separately. Place them in a bathtub, large sink, or suitable container and cover them with warm water. Add some mild dish soap and allow the racks to soak for a few hours. Once the grease has softened, scrub the racks with a suitable brush or non-scratch sponge, rinse them thoroughly, and dry them completely.

After the baking soda has had enough time to work, take a damp microfiber cloth and begin wiping the oven interior. Work from the top downward so that loosened residue doesn’t fall onto areas you’ve already cleaned. Rinse the cloth frequently because it will quickly collect grease and baking soda residue.
