Homemade Onion Oil for Hair: Can It Really Help With Hair Loss?

  • by

Hair loss can be frustrating, especially when thinning becomes more noticeable with age. Onion oil has become a popular homemade hair treatment because onions contain sulfur compounds and antioxidants that may support a healthy scalp.

However, claims that onion oil can completely reverse severe hair loss, regrow a full head of hair within days, or work 10× better than clinical treatments are not supported by strong scientific evidence. Hair growth normally takes months, not days.

🧅 A Simple Homemade Onion Oil

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium onion
  • ½ cup coconut or olive oil
  • 1 small piece of fresh ginger (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Finely chop or grate the onion.
  2. Add it to the oil in a small saucepan.
  3. Warm the mixture over low heat for about 10–15 minutes. Do not burn the onion.
  4. Allow it to cool completely.
  5. Strain the oil through a fine sieve or clean cloth.
  6. Store it in a clean, sealed container in the refrigerator and use within about a week.

💆 How to Use It

Apply a small amount to the scalp and gently massage for 5–10 minutes. Leave it on for 20–30 minutes, then wash your hair with shampoo.

Start with once or twice a week. Before applying it to your entire scalp, test a small amount on your skin because onion can cause irritation in some people.

What Can You Realistically Expect?

Onion oil may help moisturize the scalp and hair, but evidence for significant hair regrowth is limited. If hair loss is sudden, severe, patchy, or continuing despite home treatments, it’s better to identify the underlying cause rather than relying on an oil alone.

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, good nutrition, gentle hair care, and the right treatment for the cause of the hair loss.
