Daniel never knew that the money meant almost nothing compared with the fortune she had deliberately kept separate from their marriage.
Claire Bennett Mercer was the only granddaughter of Arthur Bennett, founder of Bennett Industrial Group, a privately held logistics and manufacturing empire based in Illinois. Her inheritance, placed in trust until her thirty-second birthday, was worth more than $180 million.
That birthday had been three weeks ago.
She had told no one—not even Daniel—because her grandfather had warned her before his death, “If a man loves your name more after he learns what it owns, he never loved you.”
Claire had wanted to prove Daniel was different.
Now she understood the answer.
Without arguing, she walked upstairs, packed one suitcase, and removed her wedding ring. Daniel watched from the hallway with folded arms.
“That’s it?” he asked coldly. “No begging?”
Claire placed the ring on the dresser.
“No.”
She left.
Forty minutes later, she sat in the back seat of a sedan sent by her older brother, Nathan Bennett. Across from her was Margaret Bennett, her mother, whose calm expression vanished the moment she saw Claire’s bruised wrist.
“Did he do that?”
Claire nodded.
Margaret took out her phone.
By midnight, Bennett Industrial’s legal counsel had frozen every pending contract involving Mercer Development, Daniel’s construction company. By morning, three banks requested emergency reviews of loans that depended on those contracts.
Daniel woke beside Vanessa to seventeen missed calls.
At 8:12 a.m., Nathan Bennett entered Daniel’s office with two attorneys.
Daniel stared at him. “Why are you here?”
Nathan set a folder on the desk.
“My sister is filing for divorce.”
Daniel frowned.
“Your sister?”
Nathan opened the folder and slid forward a photograph of Claire standing beside Arthur Bennett at a private family foundation event.
