Garlic: A Natural Food With Antimicrobial Properties

  • by

Garlic has been used for centuries as both a food and a traditional remedy. Its distinctive flavor comes from sulfur-containing compounds, including allicin, which forms when fresh garlic is chopped, crushed, or chewed.

Laboratory research has found that compounds in garlic can show antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and other microorganisms. However, this does not mean that eating garlic can eliminate infections throughout the body or replace antibiotics prescribed for a bacterial infection.

One simple way to include garlic in your daily diet is through a homemade garlic and lemon drink.

Ingredients:

  • 1 fresh garlic clove
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1–2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • A small amount of honey, optional

Start by peeling and finely crushing the garlic. Allow it to sit for several minutes before adding it to warm water. Stir in the lemon juice and, if desired, a small amount of honey for flavor.

Drink it with food if raw garlic causes stomach discomfort. Garlic can be quite strong and may cause heartburn, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or bad breath in some people.

For an even easier option, add freshly crushed garlic to meals such as soups, vegetables, beans, roasted potatoes, fish, chicken, or whole-grain dishes. Garlic can become part of a heart-healthy eating pattern alongside vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats.

Garlic may also be useful as part of a diet focused on heart health, healthy cholesterol levels, blood pressure management, cardiovascular health, and immune support. These benefits should be viewed as part of an overall healthy lifestyle rather than as a replacement for medical treatment.

If you have symptoms of an infection—such as persistent fever, severe pain, difficulty breathing, worsening inflammation, or signs of a serious bacterial infection—garlic should not be used instead of appropriate medical care. Antibiotics are sometimes necessary, and delaying treatment can allow an infection to become more serious.

People taking blood-thinning medication should also discuss regular high-dose garlic supplements with their healthcare professional because concentrated garlic products may affect bleeding.

Fresh garlic is a nutritious, inexpensive ingredient that can add flavor and beneficial plant compounds to everyday meals. Enjoying it regularly as part of a balanced diet can support overall wellness, but claims that garlic alone can “eliminate” every type of bacteria or cure an infection are not supported by clinical evidence.
