Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes

  • by

1. Prepare the potatoes

Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks.

Place them in a large pot and cover with cold water.

Add a generous pinch of salt.

2. Add the garlic

Add the peeled garlic cloves directly to the pot with the potatoes.

As everything cooks together, the garlic becomes soft and mellow, giving the potatoes a delicious flavor.

3. Boil until tender

Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.

Reduce the heat slightly and simmer for about 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork.

4. Drain thoroughly

Drain the potatoes and garlic in a colander.

Let them sit for about 1–2 minutes so excess moisture can evaporate.

This helps prevent watery mashed potatoes.

5. Mash the potatoes

Return the potatoes and garlic to the warm pot.

Add the butter and mash everything together until mostly smooth.

For the fluffiest potatoes, avoid over-mashing.

6. Add the warm milk

Gradually pour in the warm milk while stirring.

Continue until the potatoes reach your preferred creamy consistency.

7. Add sour cream

Fold in the sour cream.

Season with salt and black pepper.

Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.

8. Make them extra creamy

If the potatoes seem too thick, add another splash of warm milk.

For extra richness, add another tablespoon of butter.

9. Garnish

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl.

Make a small well in the center and add a pat of butter.

Sprinkle with freshly chopped chives.

10. Serve immediately

Serve these creamy garlic mashed potatoes while they’re hot.

They pair beautifully with gravy, roasted chicken, steak, meatloaf, turkey, or beef stew. 🧄🥔

⭐ Tips for Perfect Mashed Potatoes

  • Start the potatoes in cold water so they cook evenly.
  • Use warm milk rather than cold milk.
  • Don’t overwork the potatoes or they can become gluey.
  • Yukon Gold potatoes create especially creamy mashed potatoes.
  • For stronger garlic flavor, use 6–8 cloves.
  • For roasted-garlic flavor, roast the garlic first and mash it into the potatoes.
