At the $10 Million Gala, My Husband Called Me Low-Class—Then the Billionaire Chairwoman Walked In

  • by

Valerie stood onstage, waiting for the applause to fade.

“I want to begin by thanking everyone who has supported our charitable initiatives,” she said. “Our work has always been about more than profits. It is about creating opportunities and ensuring that success benefits more than a handful of people.”

She paused.

“However, tonight I also want to address an issue that has become increasingly important to me.”

Several executives exchanged glances.

Christopher felt a cold sensation spread through his chest.

Valerie continued.

“Over the past five years, Durham Global Holdings has invested substantially in businesses that showed potential but lacked sufficient capital. We believe in helping companies recover, protecting employees, and giving responsible leaders an opportunity to succeed.”

She turned slightly toward the large screen behind her.

A presentation appeared.

It showed a series of financial charts, investment agreements, and corporate ownership structures.

Christopher recognized his company immediately.

Armstrong Enterprises.

His company’s financial records appeared beneath the name.

Valerie spoke calmly.

“One of our most significant investments has been in a construction and property development company that has faced repeated financial difficulties.”

Christopher swallowed.

“Through a series of financing agreements, we helped the company maintain operations, meet its obligations, and preserve hundreds of jobs.”

Several people began whispering.

Christopher felt Paige’s fingers tighten around his arm.

“Why is your company on that screen?” she whispered.

He didn’t answer.

Valerie continued.

“Our support was provided on the understanding that the company would maintain transparent financial reporting, honor its contractual obligations, and use invested capital for its stated business purposes.”

The screen changed.

A list of transactions appeared.

Christopher’s stomach dropped.

He recognized several transfers.

Some had been approved by him personally.

Others had been submitted by Paige’s department.

Valerie didn’t raise her voice.

She didn’t need to.

“During a recent internal review, we identified transactions that require further examination. These include payments to affiliated entities, expenses lacking adequate documentation, and transfers that may not have served the interests of the businesses involved.”

The ballroom grew completely silent.

Christopher stepped away from Paige.

“This is a private business matter,” he muttered.

Unfortunately for him, several people standing nearby heard every word.

Valerie looked toward the audience.

“I want to be clear. An allegation is not a finding of wrongdoing. Any concerns must be investigated fairly, and everyone involved deserves due process.”

She gestured toward the screen.

“Accordingly, our board has authorized an independent forensic review. We have also suspended further discretionary funding to the affected company pending clarification of the transactions.”

Christopher’s face went pale.

Suspended funding?

Without Durham Global’s support, his company might not meet its next major payment deadline.

He pushed through the crowd toward the stage.

“Valerie!”

Security personnel moved to intercept him, but she raised one hand.

“Let him speak.”

Christopher stopped several feet away.

His face was flushed, and his voice trembled with anger.

“What are you doing? You’re destroying my company!”

Valerie looked at him quietly.

“No, Christopher. I’m protecting my company from risks I can no longer ignore.”

“Your company?”

He gave a disbelieving laugh.

“You’re my wife!”

A hush fell across the ballroom.

Valerie’s expression didn’t change.

“That is true. But our marriage does not give you the right to use other people’s money without accountability.”

Christopher stared at her.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that the woman standing before him wasn’t going to retreat simply because he raised his voice.

Then Valerie said something that silenced him completely.

“Christopher, do you remember what you told me in the kitchen tonight?”

He said nothing.

“You told me that everything I had was because of you.”

She paused.

“Would you like to explain that statement to the people who have been funding your company?”

Nobody laughed.

Nobody needed to.

The silence was more devastating than ridicule.

Part 5: The Mistress Makes a Terrible Discovery

Paige had barely moved since Valerie’s introduction.

At first, she had assumed the entire situation was a misunderstanding.

Perhaps Valerie had been invited as a representative of a separate company.

Perhaps the similarities were coincidental.

But the documents on the screen told a different story.

She slowly turned toward Christopher.

“Tell me those transfers weren’t ours.”

Christopher’s jaw tightened.

“Not here.”

“Christopher, look at me.”

He grabbed her wrist and lowered his voice.

“I said not here.”

Paige pulled away.

For months, Christopher had promised her that his financial position was stronger than ever.

He had told her that the investment agreements were routine, that the money allocated to corporate relations was entirely legitimate, and that the luxury apartment he had helped her purchase was a reward for her professional success.

Now she was beginning to wonder how much of that story had been true.

She looked toward Valerie.

The woman Christopher had described as dependent, unsophisticated, and incapable of understanding business was calmly addressing an audience of powerful executives.

And she appeared to know every detail of the company’s finances.

When Valerie finished her speech, the applause was restrained but respectful.

Several board members immediately approached her.

Christopher watched them gather around his wife, shaking her hand and speaking to her with obvious admiration.

He had spent years trying to impress those people.

Valerie seemed to earn their respect simply by being herself.

He pushed forward again.

“Valerie, we need to talk privately.”

She turned toward him.

“About what?”

“About our marriage.”

For a moment, her expression softened.

Not with affection.

With sadness.

“You had seven years to talk to me about our marriage, Christopher. You chose not to.”

He glanced toward the cameras.

“Please. Don’t do this in public.”

Valerie held his gaze.

“You were comfortable humiliating me in private and in front of your family. You were comfortable bringing Paige to a gala where you knew I would be excluded. You were comfortable telling me that I had nothing without you.”

She took a measured breath.

“Now you’re uncomfortable because the truth is being discussed in a room where people can hear it.”

Christopher’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Valerie turned toward one of her assistants.

“Please arrange a meeting with our legal team tomorrow morning. I want the investment agreements reviewed in full, including every outstanding obligation and every provision concerning financial misconduct.”

“Certainly, Ms. Durham.”

Christopher heard the title again.

Ms. Durham.

Not Mrs. Armstrong.

He looked at Paige, hoping she might defend him.

Instead, she stepped away.

“Christopher,” she said quietly, “you told me the company was worth hundreds of millions.”

“It is.”

“Then why are you panicking about a funding review?”

He stared at her.

She shook her head.

“I need to know what’s happening. And I need my lawyer.”

For the first time that evening, Christopher was completely alone.
