All the babysitters we had hired quit without explanation – so my husband put on a wig and applied for the job

She turned pale.

« Well? »

« Luckily, my wife recovered years ago. »

Diane got up so quickly that the backrest slipped off the bed.

« What is this? »

« The truth. »

« You cheated on me. »

« You lied to seven women. »

« I protected my granddaughter. »

« From Emma? »

« Of what could have happened. »

I came out of the closet.

Diane turned towards me.

His face collapsed.

« Emma? »

« You told strangers that I was dangerous. »

« I was afraid. »

« You showed them my confidential medical file. »

« I had to make them understand. »

« Understand what? »

She looked at Ben, as if he could help her.

But he didn’t do it.

Diane sat on the edge of the bed.

« When Sophie was born, you were sick. »

 » I know. «

« You said some horrible things. »

« I was sick. »

« You said you wanted to disappear. »

« I asked for help. »

« But what if it came back? »

Her voice broke.

« What if everyone relaxed and something happened? »

Ben shook his head.

« So we will react to what is happening now, not to what happened five years ago. »

Diane began to cry.

« I couldn’t lose Sophie. »

The truth eventually comes to light.

It had never been just a question of protecting Sophie.

Diane became Sophie’s primary caregiver during the worst months of my illness. She fed her, rocked her, and slept next to her crib while I was undergoing treatment.

When I recovered, Diane had to take a step back.

But she never really did.

« You thought every nanny replaced you, » I told him.

 » No. «

« So why scare them away? »

« I needed someone responsible. »

« You needed someone who would be loyal to you. »

She did not deny it.

Ben took the file.

« You kept files on my wife for five years. »

« I kept the evidence. »

« Regarding his recovery? »

Diane looked at him.

« Risk. »

I felt something calm down inside me.

For years, I carried the shame of having been that kind of mother during those months. Diane had turned that shame into a weapon and convinced others that healing was just an illusion.

« You will not set foot in this house again without permission, » I said.

Her eyes widened.

« Emma, please. »

« You will give me back all copies of my medical file, all photos and all recordings. »

« I was trying to help you. »

« No, » I said. « You were trying to control us. »

Ben stood beside me.

« If you contact another babysitter, Sophie’s agency or school, we will request a protection order. »

Diane stared at him.

« Would you do that to your own mother? »

« You’re the one who did this to my wife. »

She left without saying goodbye.

The next morning, Ben and I met with the agency director.

Copies of the confidentiality agreement, Carla’s statement, Julia’s statement, and Diane’s recording were placed on his desk.

The director’s usual smile was gone.

« We were not aware of this specific behavior. »

« You have received seven complaints regarding our address, » I said.

« They weren’t identical. »

« Because you never investigated it. »

Ben leaned forward.

« You paid people to keep quiet. »

She insisted that these payments corresponded to the settlement of routine disputes.

He was told that our lawyer could decide if this explanation was sufficient.

In less than two weeks, the agency released all former nannies from their confidentiality clause and announced an external audit.

The director resigned shortly afterwards.

Carla came back to our house once.

She remained rooted to the spot on the threshold, looking nervous.

« I should have told you. »

« You’re afraid, » I told him.

« I did let you believe that Sophie was the problem. »

I glanced towards the living room where Sophie was building a tower.

« She never was. »

Carla sat down with us for coffee. Sophie remembered her and immediately asked her if she still knew how to make purple modelling clay.

Carla laughed.

« I think I remember. »

She wasn’t asked to look after the children again. Too much had happened for it to be that simple.

Instead, we hired someone through another agency after conducting our own interviews and explaining what had happened.

Her name was Lacey.

On the first day, she stayed until I got home.

On the second day, she returned.

After a week, I realized that I was holding my breath every afternoon, waiting for another resignation.

That never happened.

Diane didn’t see Sophie for three months.

When we finally agreed to meet her in an advisor’s office, she apologized without defending herself.

« I had convinced myself that fear was the same thing as instinct, » she said. « It wasn’t. »

I didn’t forgive him right away.

Ben didn’t ask me to do it.

Trust returned little by little, thanks to the boundaries she respected rather than the promises she made.

A few months later, Sophie found the old wig in our bedroom closet.

She took it down and put it on Ben’s head.

« Who are you supposed to be? »

He adjusted the fringe crookedly.

« Megan. »

Sophie giggled.

« She looks strange. »

« She had a difficult job. »

I laughed for the first time at this disguise.

All the babysitters had resigned because Diane had made them believe they were protecting Sophie from me.

In reality, the person they feared was precisely the one who had done the hardest thing a frightened mother could do.

I had admitted that I needed help.

I had agreed to undergo treatment.

I had gone home and rebuilt my life.

Diane had seen me recover, but she trusted her fear more than the woman standing in front of her.
