My ex disappeared six years ago. Then I found her sleeping at JFK with two little girls who had the same eyes as me. Before I could approach them

PART 2 — “YOUR MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU”

Evelyn’s words hit me harder than any business failure ever had.

“What was she supposed to tell me?”

She looked around nervously.

The airport was crowded, but somehow the world around us seemed to disappear.

“She told me you hated me,” Evelyn whispered.

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?”

“She told me you had changed your mind about us. She said you told her you didn’t want children with me.”

I stared at her.

“That never happened.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know that now.”

One of the girls stirred again.

“Mommy?”

Evelyn immediately pulled her closer.

The little girl looked at me.

Our eyes met.

Something inside my chest twisted.

“What’s her name?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Lily.”

“And the other one?”

“Grace.”

I looked at them again.

“How old are they?”

“Five.”

Five.

Exactly five.

I felt my heartbeat pounding.

“When were they born?”

Evelyn looked away.

“October 18.”

I stopped breathing.

That date was exactly nine months after the last night Evelyn and I had spent together.

I took a step backward.

“Are they mine?”

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Her silence told me everything.

PART 3 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING DISAPPEARED

Six years earlier, I had returned from Europe expecting to propose to Evelyn.

Instead, I found her apartment empty.

My mother told me Evelyn had left voluntarily.

“She said your family was too much for her,” Eleanor had said.

I had believed her.

Now Evelyn was telling me a completely different story.

“She came to my apartment the morning after you left,” Evelyn said.

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What did she say?”

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

“She told me you had decided not to marry me.”

I stared at her.

“She said you had met someone else.”

My hands curled into fists.

“That wasn’t true.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you call me?”

“I did.”

I froze.

Evelyn reached into her handbag and pulled out an old phone.

She unlocked it.

Hundreds of unanswered messages appeared.

Messages I had never received.

Calls I had never seen.

Letters.

Photographs.

Everything.

“Your mother took my phone,” Evelyn whispered. “She told me you wanted nothing to do with me.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then she showed me something else.

A photograph of herself six years earlier.

Pregnant.

My knees nearly gave way.

“You were pregnant when you disappeared.”

“With twins.”

I looked at Lily and Grace.

My daughters.

I had missed their first steps.

Their first words.

Their birthdays.

Their entire childhood.

And someone had stolen six years from all of us.

PART 4 — THE DOCUMENT

“There’s something else,” Evelyn said.

Her voice became quieter.

“She made me sign something.”

“What?”

“A document saying I was leaving voluntarily.”

I stared at her.

“Why would you sign that?”

“Because she threatened me.”

“With what?”

Evelyn looked toward the girls.

“She said your family would make sure my children disappeared if I tried to contact you.”

I felt sick.

Then she reached into her suitcase.

From a hidden compartment, she pulled a thin folder.

“I kept a copy.”

I opened it.

My eyes immediately went to the signature at the bottom.

Marcus Vance.

My signature.

Or something that looked exactly like it.

Underneath it was a legal agreement stating that I had voluntarily relinquished any claim to future children with Evelyn.

I stared at the page.

“I never signed this.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“Because you weren’t even in New York when this was supposedly signed.”

She pointed to the date.

I remembered that day.

I had been in London.

I had hotel records proving it.

My mother’s plan had been far more elaborate than I had imagined.
