My Daughter Brought Home a Tattooed Goth Boy—Then His Phone Exposed My Husband’s 18-Year Secret

  • by

PART 2

Nobody ate dinner.

Sophie sat on the stairs.

Eli remained near the front door as though he expected to be thrown out

at any moment.

I asked Michael to start at the beginning.

PART 3

He admitted Laura had been his girlfriend before we met.

She became pregnant when they were both nineteen.

Michael said he wanted to marry her.

His parents objected.

They believed he was throwing away college and his future.

PART 4

Eli was born in 2008.

Michael was at the hospital.

The photograph was real.

So was the birth certificate.

For the first six weeks of Eli’s life, Michael visited almost every day.

Then Laura disappeared.

PART 5

Michael claimed he arrived at her apartment one morning and found it

empty.

Her number had been disconnected.

A neighbor said Laura had left with relatives.

Michael wrote letters.

Most came back.

Eventually his brother Daniel told him Laura wanted no contact.

PART 6

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

Michael looked at Sophie.

“Because by the time I met you, I thought my son was gone.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

He rubbed his face.

“I was ashamed.”

PART 7

He had searched for Laura intermittently for years.

But not aggressively enough.

That was his admission.

He accepted Daniel’s explanations because they were easier than

confronting his family.

PART 8

Eli listened without interrupting.

Then he asked:

“Did you know where we lived in Asheville?”

“No.”

“My mother said you did.”

“I didn’t.”

Neither accusation could be settled at the dining table.

PART 9

We preserved the letters, photographs, audio files, and DNA information.

Nobody treated Laura’s recording as automatically proving every

statement.

She was no longer alive to answer questions.

The documents needed context.
