Today Is My Birthday… But No One Ever Blessed Me

  • by

Today is my birthday.

I woke up this morning with a strange feeling in my chest.

For a few seconds, I smiled.

Maybe someone would remember.

Maybe my phone would light up with a message.

Maybe there would be a simple “Happy Birthday” waiting for me.

But the screen stayed silent.

No calls.

No messages.

No flowers.

No cake.

Just silence.

And somehow, that silence hurt more than I expected.

I stared at my phone for several minutes before finally putting it face down.

Then I whispered to myself:

“Happy birthday to me.”

Step 1: I Pretended It Didn’t Matter

I decided I wasn’t going to let it ruin my day.

I got dressed.

I fixed my hair.

I put on my favorite dress.

Then I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled.

At least, I tried to smile.

I told myself:

“Birthdays are just another day.”

But deep down, I knew that wasn’t true.

It wasn’t about presents.

It wasn’t about expensive restaurants.

It wasn’t even about having a big celebration.

I only wanted to feel remembered.

Step 2: I Checked My Phone Again

Around noon, I picked up my phone.

Still nothing.

I opened my messages.

Nothing.

I checked social media.

People were celebrating birthdays everywhere.

Friends were posting photographs with cakes.

Families were gathering around tables.

Partners were surprising each other with flowers.

I was happy for them.

But I couldn’t stop wondering:

“Why has nobody ever done that for me?”

I quickly closed the app.

I didn’t want to cry.

Step 3: I’ve Become Good at Saying “I’m Fine”

Over the years, I’ve learned how to hide loneliness.

If someone asks how I’m doing, I smile.

“I’m fine.”

If someone asks whether I need anything:

“No, I’m okay.”

If someone notices that I’m quiet:

“I’m just tired.”

Those two words have become my shield.

I’m fine.

But today, I don’t want to say them.

Today, I want to be honest.

I’m not fine.

I’m lonely.

And on my birthday, I wish someone would notice.

Step 4: I Remembered My Childhood

When I was a little girl, birthdays felt magical.

I used to imagine candles, balloons and laughter.

I believed birthdays were proof that someone was happy you existed.

As I grew older, that belief slowly disappeared.

There were years when nobody remembered.

Years when I pretended not to care.

Years when I bought myself a small cake and celebrated quietly.

Eventually, I stopped expecting anything.

But I never stopped hoping.

Step 5: I Went Outside

In the afternoon, I decided to leave the house.

I didn’t want to spend the entire day staring at my phone.

I went somewhere peaceful and sat outside.

The sun was beginning to soften.

People passed by.

Some were laughing.

Some were talking on their phones.

Some were holding hands.

I watched them for a while.

Then I thought:

Maybe being alone doesn’t mean I’m forgotten forever.

Maybe my story simply isn’t finished yet.

Step 6: I Bought Myself a Birthday Cake

On my way home, I stopped at a small bakery.

I looked at the cakes behind the glass.

The woman working there asked:

“Are you celebrating something?”

I hesitated.

Then I smiled.

“Yes. It’s my birthday.”

Her face immediately brightened.

“Happy birthday!”

I nearly cried.

Those two words came from a complete stranger.

But they meant more to me than she could possibly know.

She placed a little candle on the box and said:

“You should celebrate yourself.”

I thanked her.

And I carried the cake home.

Step 7: I Lit the Candle

That evening, I placed the cake on my table.

There was only one plate.

One fork.

One candle.

And one person.

Me.

I lit the candle.

For a moment, I simply watched the flame.

Then I closed my eyes.

I didn’t wish for money.

I didn’t wish for fame.

I didn’t wish for a perfect life.

I made one simple wish:

“Please let this next year bring me someone who truly cares.”

Then I blew out the candle.

Step 8: I Realized I Was Still Worth Celebrating

After eating the first piece of cake, something changed inside me.

I realized that waiting for someone else to celebrate me had made me forget something important.

I am still worth celebrating.

Even if nobody calls.

Even if nobody sends flowers.

Even if my phone remains silent.

My life still has value.

My existence still matters.

And one lonely birthday does not determine my entire future.

Step 9: Maybe Someone Else Feels the Same Way

Perhaps somewhere tonight, another person is sitting alone.

Maybe they’re looking at their phone too.

Maybe they’re wondering why nobody remembered.

Maybe they’re pretending they don’t care.

If that’s you, I want you to know something:

You matter.

You deserve kindness.

You deserve love.

You deserve someone who remembers the little things about you.

And you deserve to wake up one day and realize that you are no longer alone.

Step 10: My Birthday Message

So yes…

Today is my birthday.

And no one I expected remembered.

It hurt.

I’m not going to pretend it didn’t.

But I’m also not going to let one painful day convince me that I’ll always be alone.

Maybe next year will be different.

Maybe I’ll have someone sitting beside me.

Maybe there will be laughter in my home.

Maybe there will be a cake with more candles.

Maybe someone will look at me and say:

“I could never forget your birthday.”

Until that day comes, I’ll keep going.

I’ll keep believing.

I’ll keep taking care of myself.

And I’ll keep my heart open.

So if you happen to see this today, leave me just two words:

“Happy Birthday.” 🎂❤️

You may think it’s only a comment.

But to someone spending their birthday alone, those two words might mean more than you will ever know. 🥹❤️
