Defrosting a freezer can be one of those household chores that nobody looks forward to. Thick layers of ice can build up around the shelves and walls, taking up valuable storage space and making it difficult to remove frozen food. What should be a simple cleaning task can quickly turn into a long and frustrating job.
Fortunately, there is a simple homemade solution that can make the process much easier. With just two basic ingredients and a spray bottle, you can create an easy freezer-defrosting spray that helps loosen stubborn ice and makes cleaning your appliance less of a hassle.
All you need is white vinegar and warm water. Mix equal parts of warm water and white vinegar in a clean spray bottle, then shake gently to combine. The solution can be useful for cleaning and freshening hard household surfaces, while the warmth of the water can help loosen light ice buildup.
Before you begin, remove all food from the freezer and place it in a cooler or another suitable cold-storage area. Turn off and unplug the freezer if your appliance’s instructions allow it. Never spray liquid directly onto electrical components, lights, vents, controls, or other areas where moisture could cause damage.
Place towels around the bottom of the freezer to absorb melting water. If there is a thick layer of ice, allow some of it to soften naturally first. You can then spray the vinegar-and-warm-water mixture onto suitable interior surfaces where ice has begun loosening.
For particularly stubborn areas, give the solution a little time to work and then gently remove softened ice using a plastic scraper. Avoid knives, forks, screwdrivers, or other sharp metal objects because they can damage the freezer walls, seals, or internal components.
