Fried okra is a beloved Southern classic, known for its golden crunch and tender interior. It makes an irresistible snack or side dish and pairs perfectly with comfort food, barbecues, or casual family meals.
## Ingredients
– 1 pound fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch rounds
– 1 cup yellow cornmeal
– ½ cup all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon salt
– ½ teaspoon black pepper
– ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
– ½ cup buttermilk, or 1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons water
– Vegetable oil for frying, preferably peanut or canola
## Instructions
Wash the okra thoroughly and pat it completely dry with paper towels. Slice it into even rounds, discarding the tough stem ends.
In a shallow bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl.
Dip the okra slices into the buttermilk, then coat them well in the cornmeal mixture. For extra crunch, dip the coated okra back into the buttermilk and cornmeal mixture a second time.
Heat about 1 inch of oil in a large skillet to 375°F (190°C). Make sure the oil is fully heated before frying to help prevent a soggy coating.
Fry the okra in small batches for 3–5 minutes, turning occasionally. Gently stir the pieces while they fry so all sides cook evenly, and avoid overcrowding the pan so the oil temperature stays high.
Remove the okra once it is golden brown and crispy, then drain it on paper towels or a wire rack. Serve immediately for the best texture.
## Variations
For an Air Fryer Version, spray the coated okra lightly with oil and air fry at 400°F for 12–15 minutes, shaking halfway.
For Spicy Cajun Style, replace the salt and pepper with Cajun seasoning for a bold flavor.
For Cheesy Fried Okra, add grated Parmesan cheese to the cornmeal mixture.
For a Corn-Free Option, use panko breadcrumbs instead of cornmeal for a lighter crunch.
