Cancer can develop quietly, and some cancers cause few or no noticeable symptoms during their early stages. When symptoms do appear, they can sometimes resemble common conditions such as infections, digestive problems, hormonal changes, or ordinary fatigue.
That is why it is important not to assume that a particular symptom automatically means cancer. However, persistent, unexplained, or unusual changes in your body deserve medical attention, especially when they do not improve or continue to get worse.
Here are 20 warning signs worth knowing.
1. Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing a significant amount of weight without intentionally changing your diet or exercise routine can have many causes.
Certain cancers can affect metabolism, appetite, digestion, or the body’s energy requirements, potentially leading to unexplained weight loss.
If you are losing weight without trying, particularly if the loss is substantial or accompanied by other symptoms, speak with a healthcare professional.
2. Persistent or Extreme Fatigue
Everyone feels tired occasionally, but cancer-related fatigue can be different from ordinary tiredness.
It may persist despite getting adequate sleep and can interfere with normal daily activities.
Fatigue can have many other causes, including anemia, thyroid problems, infections, sleep disorders, stress, and nutritional deficiencies. Persistent fatigue should therefore be evaluated rather than automatically attributed to cancer.
3. An Unexplained Lump or Swelling
A new lump, swelling, or thickened area anywhere on the body should be checked, particularly if it:
- Continues to grow
- Feels unusually firm
- Does not disappear
- Is accompanied by other unexplained symptoms
Many lumps are harmless, such as cysts or benign growths, but some can be associated with cancer.
4. Unusual Bleeding
