Empty Seats and a Trembling Cup
The auditorium hummed with chatter, but my seat felt like a cold island.
Rows of caps glittered under the lights, each a promise of futures I could barely imagine.
My hands rested on the worn wooden armrest, slick with the condensation from the tea Mae had just handed me.
Her fingers shook as she set the cup on the tray beside me, the porcelain trembling like a newborn.
“Just sip, Alex,” she whispered, her voice a fragile thread.
I lifted the cup, feeling the heat seep through the thin porcelain, a brief comfort against the chill that settled in my chest.
Every sip reminded me of the night the sirens screamed and the world crumbled.
In the corners of my mind, I could still hear the screech of tires, the shattering glass, the silence that followed.
Mae’s eyes, red-rimmed and watery, searched mine for a sign of strength I didn’t feel.
“Do this one for me,” she said, squeezing my hands despite the tremor in her own.
Her grip was both a plea and a promise, and I clenched back the tide of tears.
The program rustled in my lap, the glossy pages reflecting the stage lights like a mirror.
I tried to focus on the words, on the names that would be called, on the future that felt too far away.
A Note in the Margins
The dean’s voice boomed, announcing the first graduate, and the crowd rose in polite applause.
My eyes flicked to the program, the pages turning with each name, the ink crisp against the paper.
When my turn came, a thin slip of paper slid from the back of the program, landing softly on the seat beside me.
I stared at it, the paper warm from my fingertips, the handwriting unmistakably familiar yet distant.
It was Mae’s looping script, the same that had filled my childhood journals, but the words felt like a whisper from someone else.
“You’re not alone,” it read, “I’m watching. Keep going.” The ink smudged slightly where my thumb brushed it.
My heart hammered, a sudden surge of hope and confusion tangled together.
I slipped the note into my pocket, the fabric pressing against my skin like a secret heartbeat.
The announcer’s voice rose, calling my name: “Alex Rivera!”
All eyes turned, the stage lights blinding, a spotlight bathing me in a glow I never asked for.
As I stood, the world narrowed to the sound of my own breath and the distant hum of applause.
Then, from behind, a soft hand brushed my cheek, and a familiar voice leaned close, “Guess who finally made it?”
