My fiancé left me with his 10 children and disappeared a week before our wedding — 30 years later, his lawyer showed up at my door and said, “I have an envelope for you. It was his last wish

PART 2 — THE LETTER

I unfolded the letter with trembling hands.

The handwriting was unmistakably Julian’s.

For thirty years, I had tried not to hate him.

I had failed.

But the first sentence made something inside me crack.

“If Arthur is giving you this letter, then I am finally out of time. Before you decide what kind of man I was, please let me tell you what happened that night.”

I stopped reading.

My oldest daughter, Emily, placed her hand on my shoulder.

“Mom?”

I swallowed.

“I think we finally get the truth.”

Everyone gathered closer.

I continued.

“I did not leave because I stopped loving you or the children.”

My hands began shaking.

“I left because someone threatened to kill all eleven of you.”

The room went completely silent.

Thirty years of unanswered questions suddenly had a shape.

PART 3 — THE NIGHT HE DISAPPEARED

Julian explained that three days before our wedding, he had received a phone call.

The caller knew everything.

Where we lived.

Where the children went to school.

Where I worked.

Even the names of my parents.

The man told Julian that his deceased wife’s family believed they were entitled to the children’s inheritance.

A trust worth millions of dollars had been established for the ten children.

But there was one condition.

The children had to remain under the control of their father’s family until the youngest reached adulthood.

Julian had refused.

He wanted me to become their mother.

That was when the threats began.

“They told me that if I married you, they would take the children and make you disappear.”

I covered my mouth.

I remembered that week.

Julian had become distant.

He barely slept.

He kept checking the windows.

I had thought he was nervous about the wedding.

He had been terrified.

Then came the sentence that destroyed me.

“I believed disappearing was the only way to keep you alive.”

I looked at my children.

For thirty years, I had believed their father abandoned them.

Now I discovered that he had been running from someone.

But the letter wasn’t finished.
