Tom Cruise’s Rare 1981 Parlée Photos Resurface Decades Later

  • by

Rare photographs of a very young Tom Cruise have resurfaced online more than four decades after they were originally published in the little-known magazine Parlée, bringing renewed attention to a fascinating chapter from the actor’s early career.

The photographs date from around 1981, when Cruise was still an emerging actor in New York and was years away from becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. At the time, he was only beginning to establish himself in the entertainment industry, taking acting opportunities and other work while attempting to build a career in film.

The images show Cruise posing in athletic clothing, including shorts and high socks, in a style that reflects the photography and fashion of the early 1980s. The magazine article was titled “A Career Is Born,” a remarkably appropriate description when viewed decades later because Cruise would go on to become one of the most recognizable actors in the world.

The Parlée photographs have attracted renewed interest because the publication was aimed at a gay audience. However, the existence of a photo session in a particular magazine does not establish a person’s sexual orientation. In fact, the magazine itself reportedly included a notice explaining that publishing a person’s photograph or name should not be interpreted as an indication of that person’s sexual orientation.

That distinction is important because the photographs have repeatedly been connected to speculation about Cruise’s private life. Much of that speculation came from tabloids and entertainment publications rather than from evidence establishing anything about his sexuality.

The images first attracted significant tabloid attention decades ago. In 2001, the National Enquirer republished the photographs and presented them as part of a larger story involving rumors about Cruise. His representatives disputed aspects of the reporting at the time.

The photographs subsequently became part of the broader celebrity mythology surrounding Cruise, even though the original images were simply photographs of a young actor at the beginning of his career.

Cruise’s career in 1981 was still in its early stages. He had not yet become the international movie star audiences would later know from films such as Top Gun, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Mission: Impossible, Jerry Maguire, and numerous other major productions.

Looking at the photographs today provides an unusual glimpse into Hollywood before Cruise became a global celebrity.

There was no social media, no smartphone camera, no instant online publishing and no modern digital marketing industry. A photograph appearing in a small print magazine could remain almost completely unknown outside a limited readership.

That makes the survival and resurfacing of these photographs particularly interesting.

Today, old celebrity photographs can suddenly become viral content when someone discovers a forgotten magazine, scans its pages and uploads the material to social media. Within hours, an image that remained relatively obscure for decades can be viewed by people around the world.

The renewed attention surrounding the Parlée photographs is another example of how the internet has transformed celebrity history.

Before the digital era, entertainment archives were often difficult for ordinary people to access. Old magazines were stored in private collections, libraries, newspaper archives and specialized memorabilia collections. Many photographs disappeared from public view when publications stopped printing.

Digitization has changed that completely.
