PART 2 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE HOUSE
I didn’t scream.
I didn’t cry.
I simply looked at Julian.
Then at Chloe.
Then at Evelyn.
“Who else knows?” I asked.
Julian’s face went pale.
“Clara, please—”
“Who else knows?”
Nobody answered.
That silence told me everything.
I placed the cake box carefully on the hallway table.
Then I stepped inside.
Evelyn immediately moved toward me.
“You don’t belong here.”
I looked at her.
“Apparently, I belong here more than you think.”
She frowned.
“What does that mean?”
I reached into my handbag and pulled out my phone.
“I know about the pregnancy.”
Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know about Julian.”
He looked away.
“And I know this was planned.”
Evelyn’s expression finally changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
“You’ve been investigating us?” she asked.
“No.”
I smiled faintly.
“You made the mistake of thinking I needed to.”
I had spent the previous six months quietly gathering information.
Not because I suspected Chloe.
Because I suspected Julian.
There had been strange withdrawals from our joint account.
Payments to a private clinic.
Hotel charges that didn’t match his supposed business trips.
And one payment that had appeared every month for nearly a year.
A storage facility.
I had never understood why my husband needed a storage unit.
Until that moment.
I looked directly at him.
“Where’s the key?”
His face went completely still.
“What key?”
“The key to the storage unit.”
Evelyn stepped between us.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
I laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand.”
I pulled another envelope from my bag.
Inside was a copy of the storage agreement.
I had found it that morning.
The unit wasn’t rented under Julian’s name.
It was rented under Evelyn’s.
And the emergency contact wasn’t Julian.
It was Chloe.
I watched the three of them stare at one another.
Then I opened the envelope.
“Do you know what I found inside?”
Nobody spoke.
“Boxes.”
I paused.
“Photographs.”
Julian’s eyes widened.
“Bank statements.”
Chloe began crying.
“And a folder containing documents from before Mark died.”
Evelyn’s face turned white.
That was the first time I knew I’d found the real secret.
Mark’s death had been described as an accident.
But according to the documents in that storage unit, there had been a dispute over his life-insurance policy only weeks before his death.
And someone had changed the beneficiary.
Someone using a signature that didn’t belong to Mark.
I looked at Chloe.
“Your husband didn’t leave you nearly as much money as you think.”
She stopped crying.
“What?”
I turned toward Evelyn.
“And someone has been taking money from that account ever since.”
Julian suddenly stepped forward.
“Clara, stop.”
“No.”
My voice was calm.
“You wanted me gone.”
I looked at Chloe’s stomach.
“You wanted this child to replace me.”
Then I looked at Evelyn.
“And you wanted to control everything Julian inherited.”
Nobody moved.
I placed the final document on the table.
It was a copy of a bank transfer.
The recipient was Evelyn.
The amount was enormous.
And the date was the day before Mark died.
Julian stared at the paper.
“Mom…”
Evelyn didn’t answer.
“Mom, what is this?”
She finally whispered:
“You don’t understand.”
Julian turned toward her.
“Then explain it.”
She couldn’t.
For the first time since I’d known her, Evelyn looked frightened.
I picked up my handbag.
“You have all been waiting for me to walk away quietly.”
I looked at Julian one last time.
“You got your wish.”
He reached for my arm.
I stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.”
Then I walked toward the door.
Behind me, I heard Chloe whisper:
“Evelyn… what did you do?”
I opened the door.
Before stepping outside, I turned around.
“Oh, and Julian?”
He looked at me.
“I filed for divorce this morning.”
His mouth opened.
No words came out.
“And I’ve already hired an attorney.”
I walked onto the porch.
My phone immediately buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.
YOU DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT MARK’S DEATH.
I stopped walking.
Another message appeared.
ASK JULIAN WHERE HE WAS THE NIGHT MARK DIED.
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly turned back toward the house.
Because suddenly, I realized something terrifying.
Julian hadn’t just been hiding an affair.
He had been hiding a secret connected to his closest friend’s death.
And whoever had sent that message knew exactly what happened.
The next message arrived before I could respond.
I HAVE PROOF.
Then:
COME ALONE.
